Club Sailing on Beaufort Venture

(01 Mar 2017)

Beaufort Venture, the Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School’s Elan 36, will be made available to be used during club sailing when she’s not on teaching duties. With more and more club members having obtained RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper qualifications we thought it would be an excellent avenue for members to practise the skills associated with a larger boat.

There are a few requirements to satisfy:

  • A skipper must be nominated to take charge of the crew and vessel. They must hold a RYA Day Skipper Certificate or Higher.
  • The skipper or a member of the crew must hold a VHF radio licence, and most importantly, be familiar with the operation of Beaufort's VHF radio.
  • The skipper is responsible for filing a short passage/operating plan for the afternoon with the school office prior to sailing, and returning to the marina in appropriate time to secure boat and sails, tidy up the boat and be ready for collection by club launch.
  • Crew have to have at a minimium completed a RYA Competent Crew course, as the loads and tasks involved with sailing a large heavy yacht, and manoeuvring her on and off berths are much greater than that of a 1720.
  • The yacht’s operating area is the Southern half of Dublin Bay, with the extremities marked by the shipping lane to the North and Dalkey Island to the East (sailing around the Island permitted).

The cost for members would be the same as normal club sailing rates (with this rate only applying to the selected dates below). Please note, a final decision will rest with Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School Centre Manager Kenneth Rumball as to whether a crew will be permitted to operate or not.

Booking this….

This is envisaged to be a popular option. On the dates selected, members will be invited each week to book a spot as usual after prompting by the club email. Bookings must be in by 5pm on the Thursday beforehand. Qualified RYA Day Skippers will be invited to skipper (if they want to). In the case of more than one skipper applying, a draw will be conducted on Thursday evening and parties notified as to the result by email. In the case that more than crew apply than the boat is licenced to carry a draw will take place. Crew will be informed by email on Thursday evening if this is the case.
