Dinghy Sailing for Keelboat Sailors

(09 May 2017)

There's been a lot of interest among our keelboat sailing club members in trying Dinghy Sailing. The best way forward is for members to take an introductory course. The hardest part of sailing a dinghy is keeping it upright, so that's why we suggest starting at the beginning, with a discounted Level 1 course run by the Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School.

Dinghy Course - Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June

The Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School will run an introductory dinghy course for INSC members on Saturday the 10th (10am-5.30pm) and Sunday the 11th (10.30am-5.30pm) of June. The course will cover the level 1 syllabus, however, the main focus of the instructors will be converting the skills members have on keelboats to the dinghy, namely working on balancing the boat to keep it upright.

The course will cover:

  • Learning how to Rig (Assembling your boat)
  • Pre-launch safety checks.
  • What clothing is the right clothing to wear?
  • Weather - what conditions are safe for me?
  • Turning the boat around - Tacking and Gybing
  • Setting the sails according to what angle you’re sailing at to the wind.
  • Capsize recovery - Getting the boat back upright!

Once members have attended this course, they're welcome to take out the dinghies during the club sailing sessions.

The cost for the programme will be €149, discounted from €169. This rate is only available to INSC members. Bookings can be made the the school's office, on 01 2844195, or by emailing sailing@inss.ie.
