Safety Boat

Safety Boat Skills Refresher

(09 Jan 2018)

Training Aim

The following short programme has been developed to help develop members powerboat handling skills with a view to members providing safety cover for other members sailing activities outside of the normal club sailing hours.

Programme Outline

  • Saturday 10th February
Self-Refresher morning on tiller arm powerboats
  • Saturday 17th February
    Self-Refresher morning in small RIBs
  • Saturday 24th February
Coaching on towing dinghies in small RIBs

Each powerboat session will run from 11am-1pm. It would be envisaged that club members operate a powerboat as helm and crew, practising manoeuvres as they would when providing safety cover.

On the self-refresher days, crews are to practise coming alongsides, moorings, three point turns and operating in tight marina areas. Crews are to take turns setting up and towing the other powerboats, both astern and alongside. Tows are to be set up between free floating boats.

Training on the 24th of February will be focused on approaching capsized dinghies, setting up line tows and towing.

Cost and Booking

The cost for each session is one club voucher (full rate). This is a significant discount on training as it will allow the club to develop sailing outside of school supported hours.

Please note that availability is limited. Member holding a safety boat qualification will be given first preference, as members with this qualification will be supporting the initial plan for out-of-hours sailing. Bookings are to
